Spanish coach Manuel Preciado rests in peace

In a very unfortunate incident, 54 year-old Spanish coach Manuel Preciado died of a heart attack in Valencia on Thursday.

He was found unconscious late Wednesday night in the resort city of Cullera, near Valencia, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was reported to have been suffering from flu like symptoms in the days leading to his death.

It was just day before when he agreed to coach relegated Villarreal and was scheduled to take charge on Friday.

Villarreal said in a statement Thursday morning "The coach Manuel Preciado died overnight in Valencia as a result of a heart attack"

Preciado spent six years in charge of Sporting Gijon before parting company with the club in January ahead of the challenge of achieving promotion at Villarreal, who suffered relegation from La Liga last season.

"Sporting Gijon conveys their great sadness for the loss of someone who wrote their name in our history in golden letters, and send their condolences to his family in these painful moments," said the ex-club of the departed coach.

Meanwhile, the Spanish national team, currently in Poland preparing for Euro 2012, observed a minute of silence before Thursday's practice. Spain's head coach, Vicente Del Bosque, said, "We've lost a fighter."

The unfortunate club Villarreal, was looking upon Preciado to lead them to the La Liga next season, after guiding Levante and Sporting into the top divisions.

He was the second longest serving coach in the history of the game after Jose Manuel Novoa, having a record of 232 matches for Real Sporting de Gijon.

Prior to his time at Sporting, Preciado, coached Racing Santander, Levante and Murcia, while as a player he represented Racing, Real Mallorca and Alaves among others.
