Celta Vigo Back in Spanish Top-Flight

The doors of La Liga have been opened again for Celta Vigo. The 89 years old Galician club was relegated from the Spanish Top fight in the year 2007, when they failed to qualify despite winning their last three games.

However, the last season they almost made it to the top league, but were heartbroken when they lost to Granada in penalty shootout at the semifinals of the promotional play-offs.

After the absence of five years, Los Celestes have won the promotion back to the La Liga. They secured themselves second spot behind local rivals Deportivo La Coruna in the Segunda Division standings after a scoreless draw at home to Cordoba tonight; while third-placed Real Valladolid lost at home to Guadalajara, 1-3.

Deportivo La Coruna leads the table with 91 points, 6 points ahead of Celta, where as in terms of goal difference the later marches ahead.

Both the teams have lost 9 matches each, but Celta has drawn more as compared to Coruna, which resulted in second spot.

Cordoba and Celta required a single point to clinch a place in the playoffs, thus the draw suited both the participants and they refrained from taking any risks in their obtuse encounter at Balaidos.

Celta's promotion brings about remarkable change in their fortunes, as they were demoted to Spain's third tier for a couple of seasons.

It would also help them tackle severe financial problems, and repay their debts of 51 million Euros.
