Di Matteo rewarded two year contract by Chelsea

Chelsea rewarded Roberto Di Matteo for his contribution to the West London club by appointing him as their new permanent manager on a two year contract. He now replaces Andre Villas-Boas, who left the club in the first weekend of March.

The former Italian mid-fielder led 'the blues' to their maiden UEFA Champions League title, after he was appointed on a temporary basis after Andre Villas Boas' departure.

Matteo after being appointed also guided the team to their seventh FA Cup triumph, where they defeated Liverpool FC in the final. However, the team saw best of him, when they won against Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout in Champions league finals.

Ron Gourlay, the chief executive of the team said, 'Roberto's quality was clear for all to see when he galvanized the squad last season and helped the club make history, and the owner and board are very pleased he will be continuing his good work."

'We all believed he was a young coach with much to offer when we first asked him to take charge of team affairs in March and the manner in which he worked with us, the players and all the staff, and the success that followed, made him the clear choice when it came to selecting the person to take us forward in the seasons to come." He added further.

Matteo who turned 42 last month was also equally excited as he said, "I'm obviously delighted to have been appointed as manager and first-team coach."

Pep Guardiola was apparently on top if the list after his departure from Barcelona to take over the job, but the team management decided to continue with, Matteo.

Matteo previously was signed as a player by Chelsea way back in 1996 when he was transferred from Lazio. He now becomes the fourth Italian to manage the English club.
