Czech Republic overcome Greek hurdle

After their disappointing opener against Russia, Czech Republic started their winning campaign in this Euro with a convincing 2-1 victory of 2004 champions Greece.

After going down 4-1 to Russia last Friday, the Czechs made a flying start in their second match as they netted two goals within the first six minutes of the game.

Jiracek collected a through ball and scored the first one in the 3rd minute beating the offside trap, making it the fourth fastest goal in the European Championship history.

Just three minutes later Pilar, doubled the celebrations for the Czechs as he took the advantage of poor defending and netted the ball ahead of two Greek defenders.

This was just the start of the Greeks' woes as they lost their goalkeeper Kostas Chalkias to injury on 22nd minute, and was replaced by substitute Michalis Sifakis.

After their initial setback, the Greeks looked to compose themselves as they launched a series of counter attacks.

They almost thought that they had pull backed one just before 5 minutes to the end of the first half, but Giorgios Fotaki's header was ruled out for offside.

However, the Greeks did enjoy the success of a goal, when substitute Theofanis Gekas benefited from Petr Cech's fumble to make it 2-1 just 7 minutes into the second half.

But Fernando Santos's team was unable to breach into Czech's defense for the second time, which gave Czech Republic their first point in the tournament.

The score could have been 3-0 for Czechs as Gebre Selassie got a big opening in the 46th minute, just at the start of the second half, but he couldn't control his ball.

"It was a great start. We started well against Russia too, but we were lucky enough to score twice today." Said Michal Bilek, Czech Republic coach.

The disappointed Greece coach Fernando Santos, was unhappy with the team's performance as he said, "The game started very badly for us. We were trailing very early on, and we knew this might happen."

"Unfortunately, these first few minutes of the first half were really costly. Against Poland we had managed to equalise, but it was very difficult to come back this time." He added.
