Pressure on home team recedes as Poland hold Russia 1-1

It was a full house in National Stadium, Warsaw as home team Poland played against Russia, who were celebrating their National Day.

Poland managed to live up to the expectations of its home crowd as they managed to pull off a draw after being down to a goal in the first half.

Poland had better chances of the two sided in the first half as Franciszek Smuda's side continued to create chances as Marcin Wasilewski drove in a low cross which was diverted off by the goal keeper.

The Polish crowd almost went on top of their feet when Eugen Polanski finished a beautiful flowing move in the 18th minute, but the celebrations were cut short where when he was judged off side.

A. Dzagoev netted his third goal of the tournament to give the Russian side lead in the 37th minute.

The Russian side showed some composure in the first half, breached the Polish defense on numerous occasions, but failed to put on a finishing touch to their efforts.

However, Dick Advocaat's side failed to capitalize on the initial momentum as the captain of the Polish side thudded a powerful effort past the Russian goal keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev in the 57th minute bringing them back into the game.

However the Russian side was also not left back as Kerzhakov replicated exactly the same what Wasilewski did, but it lacked a golden touch.

Towards the end of the later half, the home side sensed a chance of getting a lead in the game as Polanski kicked a low shot, but the Russian keeper stood tall near his post to prevent any damage.

As the match approached its end, both the teams failed to get on any lead, making the match end in an 1-1 draw.

With this, Russia tops the Group A table with 4 points in 2 matches, while co-host Poland is placed third with 2 points. However, a victory against Czech Republic will make them through to the final 8 stage of the tournament.

Polish manager was clear in his intentions as he said, "Today's match proved that we are good enough to win against the Czech Republic"
