Arsenal Secure 3rd While Spurs Are Happy With 4th

The Gunners' 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion on the last day of the Premier League season with three errors from goalkeeper Marton Fulop secured third place as they finished a point and a place ahead of North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to assure entry in to Europe's elite competition next season.

This is definitely an accomplishment for Arsene Wenger's team, who lost four of their first seven Premier League matches, including 8-2 mortification at Manchester United, and the Frenchman claimed his players deserve acclaim for turning their fortunes around.

Wenger said "If you look at the season as a whole, in the last 16 league games we have lost only twice,"

"Robin van Persie's lingering applause towards the away fans afterwards was a "positive sign" he will still be at the Emirates Stadium next season."

"We have created a fantastic run. In the end we finished with 70 points. That is respectable.

"We were 17th in the league in September and after the first seven games we had lost four of them. It's very difficult to imagine you can finish third. But we have had an exceptional run after our Champions League exit.

"I'm proud of the season. The unity and solidarity inside the club has been tested and we didn't show any weakness. In the end, we came back. It's a good lesson for everyone.

"I cannot say the season has been a failure. We have qualified for the 15th time. Only three clubs have done that in Europe. That means it's not as easy as it looks."

Wenger's side continued an intimidating match but picked up all three points to finish above Spurs, who will now need Bayern Munich to defeat Chelsea next week.

Tottenham had to straighten out for a fourth-place finish regardless of beating Fulham 2-0 with goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe.

Tottenham Hot Spurs needed to better Arsenal's result if they were to outshine their north London rivals on the table but will now need Bayern Munich to crush Chelsea in next week's Champions League final if they are to come in next season's competition.

Tottenham had been in third spot for a large lump of the season; a position that was lastly asserted by Arsenal's win over West Bromwich Albion.

Redkanpp "I couldn't be more pleased with what the players have done this season because if people start carrying on about what Tottenham should be doing then they want a reality check."
