French club Marseille appoints Elie Baup to succeed Didier Deschamps as their new coach. He was unveiled as new manager 48 hours after Deschamps resigned having led them to 2010 title and with two years left on his contract.
Marseille released a press statement- "Elie Baup is appointed coach of Olympique Marseille for two seasons."
"Elie Baup will link up with the players at Crans-Montana where they have been on a training camp since Wednesday. He will be presented to the media on Thursday afternoon."
Baup started his career as a professional footballer in 1974 when he played for AS Mazamet. The goalkeeper shortly went on to represent Toulouse.
After retiring as a player, the Frenchman turned to coaching and made his managerial debut with Castelnaudary in 1982, the 57-year-old has managed Bordeaux between 1998 and 2003 and guided them to the League 1 title in 1999. He then turned to Toulouse and Nantes, and has been out of contract since being sacked by Nantes in 2009.
Baup has spent the past couple of seasons as a TV pundit.
Baup is considered as one of the most intelligent coaches in the French league. His enormous understanding of French clubs and his capability to steer sides out of mayhem have marked him out as a boss considered by some to be stupendous.
The Frenchman has a tough job on his hands as Marseille executed scantily throughout last season and the players looked bleak on the pitch at times.
Baup will have to somehow work hard to get Les Phoceens back to winning ways as the fans will reconcile for nothing less than trophies and Champions League qualification next season.
Marseille finished 10th in the French league last season and qualified for the Europa League after winning the French League Cup for the third straight year.
