Ligue 1: Title Race Heating Up; Montpellier Falters To Give a Chance to PSG

The title race in French Ligue 1 is heating up after leaders Montpellier were seized a 2-2 by Evian and PSG defeated Saint-Etienne 2-0, with Lille and Lyon also winning to ensure that the battle for third - and a Champions League place - maintains its suspense.

Paris Saint-Germain are back in the race with their win over Saint-Etienne, reducing Montpellier's lead to just three points at the top of the table with three matches left to play.

Impelled by midfielder Nene, who scored his 17th goal of the season in the 21st minute, from the spot, PSG took full benefit of Montpellier's blunder, where a missed penalty by Souleymane Camara handed them a 2-2 against Evian.

Javier Pastore bagged his 11th goal of the season in the 88th minute to seal the win over Saint-Etienne and not only reel in Montpellier but also keep Lille at inlet.

Montpellier opened the scoring thorugh midfielder Younes Belhanda in 42 minute from the spot just before the half-time only to go 2-1 down as Thomas Kahlenberg in 44 minute and Kevin Berigaud in 69th minute struck.

Ligue 1 top scorer Olivier Giroud leveled matters in 84th minute but the match twisted in injury time when no less than four players; two on each side, including Belhanda; saw red in the scuffle that gave Montpellier a penalty.

Evian's goal keeper Stephan Andersen fashioned a stunning save to deny Camara from the subsequent spot kick, and now Montpellier could well be without the services of star playmaker Belhanda, a huge blow for them as PSG keep up the title race anxiety.
