Team USA book quarter final place

The U.S. Women's National Team leading striker Abby Wambach scored her third goal of the 2012 Olympics and 141st career goal to lead the USA to sweep Group G with a 1-0 defeat of Korea DPR, following wins over Colombia and France.

Wambach is second only to Mia Hamm (158 goals) in world goal scoring history. It was Wambach's seventh career goal in Olympic competition, also the most in U.S. history. Wambach has now scored a goal in each of the USA's three group matches.

The USA beat Korea DPR for 29,522 fans at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United.

The U.S. held most of the possession throughout the game, but Korea DPR did well to limit the USWNT to one goal, which came in the 25th minute, assisted by Alex Morgan. Still, Korea DPR was unable to put a single goal on frame. Korea DPR played a physical game, resulting in five cautions and a sending off for Choe Mi Gyongin the 81st minute.

Lauren Cheney was the only U.S. player to be booked.

The win marked the first time the USA has taken the full nine points from a group stage at the Olympics, going 2-0-1 in 1996, 2000 and 2004 and 2-1-0 in 2008.

The U.S. will now face New Zealand, the third place finisher in Group E, in the quarterfinal round on August 3 at St. James' Park in Newcastle.
