Robin flies to Old Trafford

Manchester United confirms they have agreed a deal to sign want away striker Robin van Persie from Arsenal. Sir Alex Ferguson has made the confine of the striker his main concern this season and agreed terms on a deal that will apparently be worth over 20 million Pounds.

A statement on the Manchester United website read: "Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached agreement with Arsenal Football Club for the transfer of Robin Van Persie.

The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course."

Van Persie exposed that he would not be signing a new deal at the Emirates - with his current contract ending in the summer of 2013.

A statement on Arsenal's website read: "Van Persie will travel to Manchester on Thursday in order to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed move."a

Robin had a great season last year where the forward scored 37 goals in all competitions, a tally that led him to being voted player of the year by both his fellow professionals in England and the country's Football Writers' Association.

In spite of the existence of Wayne Rooney, Federico Macheda, Bebe, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the squad, in addition to Berbatov, who has been extensively tipped to leave Old Trafford, United have captured a new striker.

Less clear is how Van Persie will fit into the United attack or, more precisely, which players will have to make way to have room for him.

It may be that Ferguson is eager to try Van Persie on his own up front, or perhaps Van Persie and Welbeck as a partnership, with Rooney playing the kind of advanced midfield role that Paul Scholes used to excel at just behind them.

If Rooney does drop back to midfield it is going to make it hard for Cleverley or Young, presumptuous that at least one of the wide places will go to Nani or Antonio Valencia.

It is not projected there will be any problems with either remaining part of the deal. And providing it goes through without a snag, Van Persie could face Everton in United's opening Premier League game at Goodison Park on Monday.
