Super Mario dents Dutch's Euro hopes

Mario Gomez's two lethal first half goals, has almost ended Netherlands' Euro hopes despite a late surge from the Oranje. Gomez was spectacularly efficient while Dutch stars like Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie were wasteful and sloppy.

Dutch were tipped as the best team with superb attack before the kick-off of Euro 2012 but despite that they have best strikers they were not able to beat the German defence. The only consolation goal for Netherlands was struck by Persie which was not enough, and now they are on the brink of being ousted from Euro 2012.

Marwijk again gambled on Robben and Van Persie and kept Van der Vaart and Bundesliga top-scorer Huntelaar on the bench and his ploy didn't pay-off.

Dutch coach Van Marwijk said: "Early on we had decent chances but the German goals came out of nowhere. We defended badly. Our offense and defense did not connect."

"We still have a chance to go through and we have to believe in it."

"Thousands of fans have come here and we have to do well for them, we have to beat Portugal now to have a chance."

Germany now tops group of Death with six points and are on the verge of booking a berth in last eight. As much as Holland had been profligate, Germany had been extraordinarily irrefutable.

Before the match German coach Low warned saying "We have done well to beat Portugal and Holland but we can't become complacent.

"We need to go about our work in a professional manner and let others worry about us. If we get carried away with our own success we will come unstuck."

After his team won the match Low said "The door to the quarter-finals is now wide open."

"We wanted to take the next step today and it was important to win the second game. It is important to win the group to stay in Gdansk, which would be an advantage in the quarter-finals."

"Holland created a few chances, which our defence dealt with, but I had the feeling Holland were physically dead after 60 minutes."
